Our Styling Tips 2023

2nd of February, 2023

As the days start to lengthen (hurrah), and carpets of snowdrops appear, our thoughts turn to the emerging Spring property market, and maybe if you are considering a move, yours are too?

With that in mind, read on to discover our latest on home styling trends and accessories, and our top tips to style your home to sell in 2023.

So, what’s ‘in’ for 2023.  Sustainability is a buzzword on many minds, so look for eco-friendly, recycled, and natural wares. Country cottage themes continue with a strong focus on balancing and retaining heat, think natural textures and layers.  Materials such as wood, cork, and aluminium (the most recycled of all metals) tick the boxes.

Styling to sell doesn’t need to be expensive, and some cleverly thought out accessories can make even the most stale and tired rooms look fresh and fashionable again, so let’s dive into our seven top styling tips for 2023 which won’t break the bank:

1. Rugs

A large rug can transform a room, adding warmth and accentuating the room’s style. Rug trends in 2023 take a vintage turn. A simple flat pile from recycled materials with neutral tones echoing the room is on trend rather than thicker pile.

You don’t have to spend a fortune either; decide on a budget and stick to it. You should be able to get a large rug, say 8’ x 4’, for under £150 if you shop around.

2. Cushions

A really easy way to provide colour, texture and interest to a room is by adding cushions. Provide an instant update in simpler yet nostalgic styles: textures such as woollens, and designs such as patchwork are in.

2023 has a cosy country cottage look and feel for accessories.

3. Statement lamps

Good lighting can transform a space, and even impact your mood.  This year lamps will be large and bold with pleated shades.  If you have a dark corner without a socket, look for a rechargeable lamp or even a rechargeable lightbulb that screws in but doesn’t require electricity.

4. Flowers

The finishing touch for viewings, adding scent and a sense of homeliness. Make sure arrangements are in keeping with the overall style of the house and the room.

If in doubt, keep the colours pale and the style simple with a vintage, minimal theme, or try foilage only in a large clear bowl.

5. Toiletries

Toiletries for photos and viewings should be modern, elegant and the best you can find. Keep them eco-friendly and high-end – Neom, and Arran Aromatics are great options. Similarly, local artisan brands are a nice touch, Cairnie Soaperie, based in Kirkintilloch, have a great range which ties in with a vintage feel.

Remember, keep these for viewings only – hide them after each one to keep them in pristine condition.

6. Bedding

New bedding for all rooms, especially the master bedroom, is a great way to show off each space to the best of its advantage. Environmentally-friendly fabrics with natural tones are growing in popularity – keep a look out for a brand with an eco-friendly ethos.

Don’t forget vintage accents either – another key trend for styling a bedroom.

Two cushions and a throw on a bed will add that elegant touch of style without overcomplication.

7. Towels

Buy some new ones and make sure no one uses them – they’re just for show! Pop them away with the toiletries after each viewing to keep them crisp and fresh.

White or neutral shades are best, a staple style for a bathroom. They should be in keeping with the bathroom itself to ensure it looks simple and clean.

8. Wall hangings

Mirrors add a feeling of coordination and harmony to a room, along with reflecting light, making rooms feel more spacious.  Look for mirrors with Aluminium frames, being an infinitely recyclable material, aluminium takes up to 95 percent less energy to recycle it than to produce it raw, limiting emissions.

Originall Wood Panelling in a home in Kirkintilloch

Wood panelling will remain popular in 2023, with searches for ‘decorative wall panels’ and ‘modern wall panelling’ up by 131% and by 121% respectively, so if your home already features panelling, bring it into 2023 with lick of paint in a warm neutral tone to delight trend savvy viewers.

Remember to look at each room with an objective viewpoint; remove or replace accessories that don’t add to the aesthetic of the area.  Artisan items from local suppliers add on-trend interest, try Create ED in Kirkintolloch or Mugdock Makkers at Mugdock Country Park for a selection of locally produced ceramics and ornaments.

First impressions are everything.
